A new species of Roeboides (Teleostei: Characidae) from Costa Rica and Panama, with a key to the middle American species of the genus Neotropical Ichthyology
Matamoros,Wilfredo A.; Chakrabarty,Prosanta; Angulo,Arturo; Garita-Alvarado,Carlos A.; McMahan,Caleb D..
A new species of Roeboides is described from the Pacific slope of Costa Rica and Panama. Roeboides bussingi differs from all other Central American Roeboides and all members of the R. guatemalensis species group by the following combination of characters: presence of 18-22 scales above the lateral line (vs. 12-16 in R. dientito); 15-22 scales below the lateral line (vs. 10-14 in R. dientito, and 20-24 in R. loftini); an inconspicuous, sometimes absent, crescent-shaped humeral spot (vs. a large round, conspicuous humeral spot in R. carti, R. dayi, R. dientonito, R. ilseae, R. loftini, and R. occidentalis); a small wedge-shaped spot that does not reach the lateral line (vs. a large spot crossing the lateral line in R. guatemalensis); a teardrop shaped caudal...

Using community phylogenetics to assess phylogenetic structure in the Fitzcarrald region of Western Amazonia Neotropical Ichthyology
Craig,Jack M.; Carvalho,Tiago P.; Chakrabarty,Prosanta; Derouen,Valerie; Ortega,Hernán; Petry,Paulo; Reis,Roberto E.; Tagliacollo,Victor A.; Albert,James S..
ABSTRACT Here we explore the use of community phylogenetics as a tool to document patterns of biodiversity in the Fitzcarrald region, a remote area in Southwestern Amazonia. For these analyses, we subdivide the region into basin-wide assemblages encompassing the headwaters of four Amazonian tributaries (Urubamba, Yuruá, Purús and Las Piedras basins), and habitat types: river channels, terra firme (non-floodplain) streams, and floodplain lakes. We present a robust, well-documented collection of fishes from the region including 272 species collected from 132 field sites over 63 field days and four years, comprising the most extensive collection of fishes from this region to date. We conduct a preliminary community phylogenetic analysis based on this...
